Jake’s Witch Project Definitions of Beer Contest
India Pale Ale/Pale Ale
Characterized by floral, fruity, citrus-like, piney or resinous American-variety hop character, this style is all about hop flavor, aroma and bitterness. This has been the most-entered category at the Great American Beer Festival for more than a decade, and is the top-selling craft beer style in supermarkets and liquor stores across the U.S.
Browns, Porters and Stouts
Brown porters have no roasted barley or strong burnt/black malt character. Low to medium malt sweetness, caramel and chocolate is acceptable. Hop bitterness is medium. Softer, sweeter and more caramel-like than a robust porter, with less alcohol and body. Porters are the precursor style to stouts
A beer that has higher alcohol content than its traditional counterpart. It may also contain more hops than normal.
Any beer that does not fall into one of the above categories.
Best of Show
Each above category above winner is placed in for Best of Show. Winner will be determined from that group.
All entries must be handcrafted products, containing ingredients available to the general public, and made using private equipment by hobbyist brewers.
The competition organizers are not responsible for mis-categorized entries. The entry form is to be filled out by the brewer and they therefore assume responsibility for the form. Judging of the entry is based on the style and will be judged accordingly.
The competition organizers reserve the right to combine styles for judging and to restructure awards as needed depending upon the quantity and quality of entries.
Qualified judging of all entries is the primary goal of our event. Judges will evaluate and score each entry. The average of the scores will rank each entry in its category. The Best of Show judging will be determined by a Best of Show panel based on a second judging of the top winners.
Bottles will not be returned to entrants.
